Chapter 5: Triglyceride-lowering treatment in adults

چکیده

RATIONALE Non-pharmacological treatment of high triglycerides TLC includes dietary modification, weight reduction, increased physical activity, reducing alcohol intake, and treatment of hyperglycemia (if present). Evidence that TLC will reduce serum TGs in patients with CKD is weak. However, the elements of TLC are unlikely to lead to harm and may improve general health. In the opinion of the Work Group, it is reasonable to advise patients with high fasting levels of serum TGs (45.65 mmol/l [4500 mg/dl]) to adopt TLC. Dietary changes that may reduce serum TGs include a low-fat diet (o15% total calories), reduction of monosaccharide and disaccharide intake, reducing the total amount of dietary carbohydrates, and use of fish oils to replace some long-chain TGs. Dietary modification should be used judiciously, if at all, in individuals who are malnourished. This is a weak recommendation that is based on very low quality evidence.

Trends in lipids and lipoproteins in US adults, 1988-2010.

CONTEXT Serum total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) contribute to atherosclerosis and its clinical consequences. Between the periods 1988-1994 and 1999-2002, mean TC and mean LDL-C declined in adults. During this time, there was an increase in the percentage of adults receiving lipid-lowering medications. Geometric mean triglyceride levels increased but mean hig...

In-vitro Synergistic Effect of Metformin and Berberine on High Glucose-induced Lipogenesis

Metformin and berberine have been reported to have lipid lowering effects. This study aims to investigate lipid lowering effects of berberine and metformin, alone and in combination, in HepG2 cells to determine whether berberine and metformin work synergistically and elucidate their mechanisms. HepG2 cells were treated with 33 mM glucose in the presence of various concentrations of berberine an...

Mechanisms of triglyceride-lowering effect of an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor in a hypertriglyceridemic animal model, the Zucker obese rat.

Inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methyl glutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase have been approved for treatment of hypercholesterolemia in humans. This class of therapeutic agents, in addition to lowering plasma cholesterol, reduces plasma triglyceride levels. We have investigated the mechanism of triglyceride-lowering effect of lovastatin in the hypertriglyceridemic state by using a rodent model of ...
